Solving Top 20 Accessibility Failures (1 LU/HSW)
Course Description
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in 1990, yet it is rare to find a newly constructed building that is 100 percent compliant with the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. There are common violations that are seen over and over again. This course will identify twenty common errors and how to correct them.
Aging in Place: Practical Solutions (2 LU/HSW)
Course Description
This course gives practical solutions to design homes to be more user friendly to an aging population. Thus, allowing them to age in place. The knowledge and technology to enable our elders to stay at home are well established. All that’s lacking are finances to do so, the time to do so, the will to do so, and wide-spread dissemination of knowledge on how to do so. This course addresses the last of those.
Architecture, Urban Planning, and Crime Prevention (4 LU/HSW)
Course Description
This course is intended to explain the overall concept of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) with a focus on its main principles and how they are implemented via urban planning and other means.
Resilient Design (5 LU/HSW)
Course Description
This course is intended to discuss the origins of the concept of Resilience and how it has come to become relevant in building design. The course will address the overlap and differences between sustainability and resilient design. This will be followed by examining how architecture is embracing resilient design and how these influences and inform building design and urban planning. The increasing role of regulatory bodies in adopting sustainability and resilient design principles will be explored and the current and future trends in resilient design will be presented with a concluding discussion on the long-term impact of resilient design concepts on other parallel design trends.
